Walking by the IJ
As a result of the rapid transformation of Amsterdam-Noord, there is plenty to learn about the development of a former business area into the current situation in which people live and work by the IJ during a walk along the river bank. There are walks from the Buiksloterweg, across the Central Station, heading both east and west.

The transformation of the Northern IJ-bank
For years, the northern IJ-bank functioned as an industrial zone, but from the start of this century, the area has started to transform into a place for house-building and, in particular, into a creative hotspot. Take in old shipbuilding yards, architect-designed industrial accommodation, ravelins and modern architecture.
North/South underground line
After years of construction, the North/Southline has been operating since the summer of 2018. During this tour you will gain insight into the building process and the finances. In all eight metrostations, attention is paid to architecture and specially designed art.

A cruise on the IJ
Both the southern-IJ and northern-IJ banks have undergone a vast transformation in recent decades. Today, the IJ banks are the centre of the modern city. During this cycle tour, which goes as close to the water of the IJ as possible, it gives an impression of all the changes. With the ferries – which are free of charge – both of the IJ-banks will be visited.

The Bird Route
The Vogelbuurt district in Amsterdam-Noord was the initial council housing project in this part of the city. This route provides information about the origin and history of the district, its residents, the architecture and each of the 38 bird species that are found in this area.

Amsterdam School architecture in Amsterdam-Noord
The Amsterdam School is an important architectural and artistic trend, the effect of which has extended far beyond Amsterdam. The constructions show magnificent symbolism referring to nature, the countryside and alien cultures. Bricks and roofing tiles comprise the basic building material.

The garden villages of Noord
The garden villages are characterised by low single-family dwellings with a front and back garden in green surroundings. These garden villages are mainly located around a central square where shops and other facilities are located. Amsterdam Noord has various garden villages, each with a typical identity.

Amsterdam-Noord is characterised by the immense variety of works of art; sturdy steel works of art related to the shipbuilding industry, magnificent memorial tablets with a socialist background, a memorial to the Second World War, and colourful mosaics below viaducts.

The Waterland Sea Walls
In order to protect the population and their cattle, around 1300 farmers erected the Waterland sea wall, which still meanders through Amsterdam-Noord and still has a water-defence function. This is where stylish aristocratic dwellings alternate with magnificent panoramic views.

Cycling and sailing in rural Noord
North of Amsterdam is rural Noord: a gathering of villages surrounded by pastures. For centuries, the farmers and fishermen of these villages provided food for the people in Amsterdam. The rough industrial terrains and the splendid peatlands, the quiet atmosphere of a village just outside the city.
Stories about the captains’ homes, the flooding of the Oostzaan garden community, the Honig doctor’s home, the Overhoeks Tower, the Children Tree, Ajax, the hospital homes, the construction of the North Sea Canal, the Gallows, the ferries crossing the IJ, the Ransdorp tower, the friendly bombardment, the Mosveld Babies and many other stories.
During my work for the district of Amsterdam-Noord, I have shown thousands of people how Amsterdam-Noord has changed. These changes have even caught the attention of the New York Times. But not only the NYT. All sorts of media are paying attention to the way Amsterdam-Noord is undergoing a transformation.
